Firm, with sandy tannins around a ripe core of currant and berry flavors, the fruit winning easily on the finish. Needs time, but this will be an elegant wine.

Dense and distinctive, this isn't heavy, yet is rife with tobacco, roast beef and red peppercorn accents to its black currant and blackberry flavors, persisting impressively on the complex finish.

Northstar’s Columbia Valley Merlot nicely captures the silky finesse of the vintage. Velvety, deep and rich, it’s loaded with toast, licorice and chocolate, along with plenty of ripe red and black fruits. It’s three quarters Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a splash of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot.

Certainly one of the finest Merlots ever made by Northstar, this is notable for the floral and citrus high notes, over cherry and cassis. There’s coconut, chocolate and coffee, tar and tobacco also—a full throttle, seductive wine.
Northstar 2005 Stella Maris Red Blend Columbia Valley
90 points - Wine Enthusiast - December 31, 2009
This pleasing blend yields a spicy, fruity wine with sweet strawberry and cherry candy flavors. Though two thirds new oak was used, it is not prominent. Smooth and accessible, this delicious wine is accented with aromas of sweet straw.
