Northstar 2007 Merlot Walla Walla Valley
- “Outstanding!” - Wine Press Northwest - August 1, 2011
David “Merf” Merfeld’s much anticipated “Big Dipper” project reportedly is set for release in the fall of 2012, and hopefully he has used this production -- arguably the best work he’s done with Walla Walla Valley fruit -- as a template. Fruit from Anna Marie and Loess vineyards form the base, while Windrow contributed to the Cabernet Sauvignon (16%) while Petit Verdot (6%) came from outside the appellation at StoneTree on the Wahluke Slope. Harmonious aromas of black currant, Bing cherry and strawberry include a background of Graham cracker and pink peppercorn. The palate shows elegance with notes of black cherry, boysenberry and chocolate pudding with pleasant acidity and a fascinating feel of sandy tannins. Production of this is a mere fraction compared with the Columbia Valley release, and look for the black label.
Northstar 2007 Merlot Columbia Valley
- Capital Gazette - July 27, 2011
One of the most reasonably priced premium merlots, this Washington gem is rich in plum and cherry flavors with hints of vanillin oak and spice. It is blended with 20 percent cabernet saugivnon and 5 percent petit verdot. Good structure and balance make it a keeper, but the fine tannins make it enjoyable now with grilled beef.

Northstar sets the standard for Merlot and how it should be made not only in Washington but in all of the United States. I think I had my first bottle about 10 years ago and continue to enjoy it, often ordering it out with friends because I see it on a wine list and am confident it will highlight anything from seafood to steak. Merlot has gotten a bad rap over the years and Northstar proves that a luscious wine can be produced from this grape if treated with respect. Add in mineral rich soil, a wonderful team and hearty vines and greatness is created. I tried the 2007 Walla Walla Merlot recently, which blended 78% Merlot with 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. The Cab and Petit Verdot add depth to the wine, but the true flavors of the Merlot with ripe red fruit, dried cherries, dark chocolate and nutmeg are layered throughout the complex and well balanced wine.
