Northstar 2005 Merlot Walla Walla Valley
- “Recommended” - Wine Press Northwest - April 1, 2009
The Walla Walla Valley portion of this program is beginning to take off, and this is supremely easy-drinking, as Merlot should be. Red tones ring true throughout with strawberries, black cherries, red peppercorns, leather and even a hint of tutti fruity ice cream.
Northstar 2005 Merlot Columbia Valley
91 points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine - November 1, 2008
The richness evident in Northstar's Walla Walla bottling is very much on display in this equally expressive but somewhat riper bottling. It anything, the sweet aspects of the cherryish fruit and caramelly oak are even more outgoing here, and this one's softer center and bold but still somewhat lessened tannin load make it more accessible now and likely to round out a bit sooner.

Intriguing notes of sarsaparilla, sweet loam, ripe red cherries and crème caramel give a good start to this full-bodied wine, and its deep cherry, currant and woody, loamy flavors follow on directly. Pushy astringency makes itself known in the latter palate at this point, but there is enough fruit in reserve to allow the wine to age into a smoother maturity with cellar time and a wait of some three to five years would seem the minimum required.

The 2005 Merlot Columbia Valley contains 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot aged for 18 months in 70% new French and American oak. Opaque purple, it offers up an expressive nose of smoky black cherry and black currant aromas, spice box, and mineral. It has a firm, tannic entry which is a mild cause for concern. The wine has good flavors and plenty of depth but there is tannin in the finish which blunts the fruit. It may evolve and round out but that is a gamble.

The 2005 Merlot Walla Walla Valley contains 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot aged in 80% new French and American oak. Opaque purple/black, the aromatic array includes pain grille, pencil lead, and assorted black fruits. It makes an impressive entry onto the palate with layers of fruit, substantial tannin, and excellent concentration. The finish is long and fruit-filled suggesting that this wine’s future is brighter than that of its Columbia Valley sibling. Drink it from 2012 to 2020.
