Northstar 2004 Merlot Columbia Valley

90 points - Wine Advocate - August 1, 2007

The 2004 Merlot also contains 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Dark ruby/purple, it exhibits floral (violet) and lavender notes as well as cassis and black currants. This is followed by a plush wine with excellent depth, concentration, and sweet fruit. Drink this balanced, lengthy wine over the next 10-12 years. Northstar is a Walla Walla Merlot specialist founded in the early 1990s under the Stimson Lane umbrella with Jed Steele as consulting winemaker. The winery now has estate vineyards which have not yet come on-line.

Aggressive, expensive tasting French oak rules the day here, with moderately ripe, totally generic black cherry fruit flavors. It’s all about the barrel, with butterscotch, toast, butter and more butter. Very tasty, quite drinkable…

Northstar 2003 Merlot Columbia Valley

Smoky scents of toast and oak lead to spicy plum and berry flavors in a richly textured palate. Nicely balanced acidity, black fruit flavors, and ripe tannins give the wine a pleasing liveliness. Drink with grilled flank steak with garlic and olive oil gremolata

Roasted nut notes on the nose and on the tongue complement a dense palate of ripe plum and blackberry. Subtle and pleasing accents of white pepper, chocolate, and cinnamon add interest, while the firm tannins and chewy density add a textural flourish. A big and plush wine for pairing with chili-rubbed, fall-off-the-bone short ribs.

The second label for Northstar shines in this warm vintage, with a firm line of dark fruits, streaked with earth and mineral. Cherry fruit holds the center, a bit overwhelmed by the tannins at this time, but looking good for another half decade or so of aging.
