Northstar’s commitment to the creation of world-class Merlot from Washington is demonstrated in the creation of Northstar Premier. This extremely limited production wine is sourced from the best vineyards in the region and can be enjoyed now but will age gracefully for many years to come.
A cool winter and moderate spring in the Columbia Valley delayed bloom slightly, but dry, warm weather and lots of sunshine through the summer helped the grapes catch up and led to fruit with bright acidity and good sugar levels. Harvest began in early September and was finished before an early freeze in early October affected parts of the growing region. Wines from the 2009 vintage exhibit lots of natural acidity with balanced fruit and tannins.
Fruit from top vineyard sites was carefully picked and fermented in separate small lots while awaiting selection for inclusion in Northstar Premier. In 2009, Merlot from Cold Creek Vineyard, one of the oldest and most acclaimed vineyards in Washington, was a clear standout. Planted in 1973, Cold Creek is one of the warmest and driest sites in the state, providing fully mature fruit with great intensity and concentration. Cold Creek Vineyard is LIVE and Salmon Safe certified.
