Northstar 2009 Syrah Walla Walla Valley

2009 Syrah

Northstar’s focus on creating world-class Bordeaux-style Merlot-based wines begins in the vineyards where the best classic blending varietals are selected to create Northstar’s Merlots. We are pleased to showcase the unique characteristics of these varietals in extremely limited bottlings each vintage.

A cool winter and moderate spring in the Walla Walla Valley delayed bloom slightly, but dry, warm weather and lots of sunshine through the summer helped the grapes catch up and led to fruit with bright acidity and good sugar levels. Harvest began in early September and was finished before an early freeze in early October affected parts of the growing region. Wines from the 2009 vintage exhibit lots of natural acidity with balanced fruit and tannins.

The 2009 vintage of our limited production, 100% Syrah is sourced primarily from Anna Marie Vineyard. Located at the south end of the Walla Walla AVA, this vineyard is one of the warmest sites in the valley, yielding grapes with concentrated varietal flavors of blackberry and blueberry and elegant tannins. The balance of the fruit was sourced from William’s Ranch Vineyard on Red Mountain.
