The 2012 vintage experienced cool temperatures during spring, which delayed bud break and bloom by three to four weeks. Consistently warm summer temperatures lengthened the ripening period and resulted in harvest starting three weeks later than normal. Without the typical 100-degree Fahrenheit temperature spikes during the growing season, the grapes ripened very evenly with the required sugar levels and ideal physiological maturity.
Diversity of vineyards and sub-appellations within the Columbia Valley are Northstar’s hallmarks. Fruit is chosen from the very best possible sources throughout the Columbia Valley. The Northstar team works closely with each grower to achieve specific fruit quality and yield parameters. The Semillon comes from the oldest block at Vineyard 10, established in 1978 in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. This year’s 2012 Stella Blanca has Moscadelle du Bordelais added into the blend. The Moscadelle du Bordelais is an extremely rare varietal for Washington State. This Muscadelle comes from our registered mother block at Canoe Ridge, with a small amount coming from the research block at Vineyard 10.
