Columbia Valley

  • Largest AVA in Washington State.
  • Encompasses 10 sub-AVAs: Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope, Rattlesnake Hills, Snipes Mountain, Yakima Vallley, Lake Chelan, Ancient Lakes and Naches Heights.
  • The ancient Ice Age Missoula Floods shaped the region’s topography and soils.
  • Characteristics: Cherry, raspberry and plum flavors with balanced tannins and acidity.

Red Mountain

  • Sub-AVA of Columbia Valley.
  • Smallest and warmest AVA with a desert-like climate.
  • Growing season: about 200 days.
  • Climate: Hot days, cool nights.
  • Rainfall: 5-6 inches per year.
  • Elevation: 540-1,410 feet.
  • Soils: Coarse, sandy and silty loam with glacial blown loess soils.
  • Characteristics: Bright red fruit with big, balanced tannins.

Walla Walla Valley

  • Sub-AVA of Columbia Valley.
  • Straddles both Washington and Oregon.
  • Growing season: 190-220 days.
  • Climate: Warm days, cool nights.
  • Rainfall: 12.5 inches per year.
  • Elevation: 984-2,000 feet.
  • Soils: Loess, unstratified calcareous.
  • Characteristics: Soft and supple texture with earthy, dried herb and dark fruit characteristics.

Horse Heaven Hills

  • Sub-AVA of Columbia Valley.
  • Proximity to Columbia Gorge creates 30% more wind which is helpful in reducing rot and disease, makes the grape skins thicker and thus, concentrating the juices for more intense flavors.
  • Growing season: about 200 days.
  • Climate: Hot days, cool nights with high winds.
  • Rainfall: 6-9 inches per year.
  • Elevation: 300-1,800 feet.
  • Soils: Sandy-loam soils.
  • Characteristics: Upfront aromatics with intense flavors and bright acidity.
